Dr. Jeanne is a writer, a wellness counsellor, a spiritual counselor, a retired Doctor of Chiropractic who emphasized holistic health and nutrition. She is also a publisher. In her spare time she reads, square dances, plays bridge, travels and enjoys her Ken and her family.
Jeanne was born, and grew up on a working ranch in the sandhills of Nebraska. For six years she lived in a sod house. During World War Two, she and her parents ran their ranch. She was a part of almost every cattle drive from the time she was seven until she left home so she was a true cowgirl.
Following her junior year in High School, she and her best friend, Mary Jo Tinkham, went to work in West Thumb in Yellowstone National Park. There she met Ken Hounshell; they fell in love and spent two summers together before Jeanne returned to Nebraska and college.
At Nebraska Wesleyan University, she met Jack Buckingham and at the end of her sophomore year they were married in her beloved sandhills. She received her bachelor’s degree in 1963. She and Jack had four children: Mark, Dawn, Kristina, and Laurie and six grandchildren: Cory, Kayla, Josh, Jarin, Leigh, and Autumn and four great-grandchildren.
She taught for many years and then they owned and operated the KOA Kampground in Gunnison, Colorado. She and Jack graduated together from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic when they were both in their 50’s. That was a day filled with joy and pride. Jeanne is a semi-retired Doctor of Chiropractic. She is a licensed counselor and teaches in her local church.
In November 2001, she received a phone call from Ken. They had not met for 47 years.
THIS PRECIOUS LOVE IS THEIR STORY. She spent five years writing it. In the end, it is a book about their love: This love, this precious love that has come again to them in their later years.
She and Ken have spent the last year marketing it. She is already at work on her next book about her grandparents. Her grandmother came from Denmark to the United States to raise her grandfather's seven children. They were married and she had 14 more. Twenty one children! Now that's some story!
Ken and Jeanne live in the warmth of the Arizona desert and spend their summers in a log cabin in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. They square dance, play bridge, read, hike, bicycle and travel in their motor home and Jeanne writes in these beautiful spots that she and Ken call home.
